The Southwest Monsoon Season is an annual weather pattern that occurs during the late summer months—July, August and September—across Arizona, New Mexico, southern California, Utah and Nevada. As daytime temperatures soar, strong thunderstorms accompanied with thunder, lightning and extreme rainfall form during the late afternoon and early evening hours. As nighttime temperatures cool, the storms dissipate until the cycle begins again the following day.
Flash floods, high winds, and dust storms that are associated with the Southwest Monsoons can wreak havoc on your swimming pool. Take preventative action to help protect your pool before the storm and clean up quickly afterwards. Follow these tips to keep your pool clean and swim ready this monsoon season.
For any persisting water clarity issues, consider using a polymer-based clarifier such as Super Water Clarifier or Crazy Clarifier to remedy it by binding smaller particles together for more efficient filtration.

Inspect your pool surfaces or structures for any damage and contact a pool builder or service company for necessary
Clean Up Pool Area
Remove sticks, leaves, and other visible debris once pool area is cleared for safety. Drain any excess water from your swimming pool.
Remove Dirt From Pool Water
Empty your skimmer basket(s) and brush, skim and vacuum your pool after a storm. Use a flocculant to sink debris and other floating matter to the pool floor for easier clean up with your pool vacuum.
Test
Test your water 2-3 times per week during monsoon season, and after a storm. Re-balance your pool regularly. Debris and contaminants from heavy rain and wind can offset your chlorine and pH levels leading to algae growth or unsafe swimming conditions. Use a multi-functional algaecide weekly as a preventative treatment and shock your pool to aid in contaminant removal after a storm.
Check Filter
Clean or backwash your filter when the pressure gauge raises 10 psi above normal.
